Though in my experience, Brasilians are often very laid back (to the point of showing up hours late to rendezvous), I am seeing a distinctly fiery side since I have arrived. This started, of course, with the near riot at the GOL ticket counter yesterday.
I finally got through that alive and was going through the airport trying to find my gate. I asked a couple if folks who were clearly airport employees but they just shook their heads at me. I figured that it was because I was a gringo but two Brasilians also tried to ask the same folks and got refused. Their response was far more agitated - they started yelling and eventually we all got the info we needed.
I eventually made it onto the plane and got moved three times because of folks wanting to sit with their travelling companions (understandable). I ended up sandwiched between a woman screaming down her phone and a woman who ran on board just as the doors were closing. She immediately lit into the guy sitting in front of her, who had reclined his seat into her lap. At her insistence he raised it until about five seconds into the flight when he lowered it again. This time, no amount of screaming could convince him otherwise.
Just now we went to pick up Cristiano, Sandra's husband, from the airport. Many of the streets in Curitiba have changed direction because of the World Cup. So we ended up driving the wrong way down a few streets. Instead of drivers being understanding, there was a lot of screaming, honking and NOT getting out of our way. It was a terrifying game of chicken.
